What to Expect at Your Appointment

The process begins with a consultation. We review your medical history and current medications, then use our in-house Cone Beam CT to get a precise picture of tooth position and surrounding structures before planning the approach.

On the day of the procedure, local anesthesia numbs the area. For patients who want it, nitrous oxide sedation is available to reduce anxiety and improve comfort. Simple erupted wisdom teeth can often be removed similarly to a standard extraction. Impacted teeth may require a small incision and, in some cases, sectioning the tooth for removal. Gauze is placed afterward to control bleeding, and we go over written aftercare instructions with you before you leave. Patients who receive sedation should arrange for a driver.

Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal

Swelling and discomfort in the first two to three days are typical and often improve within a week. Applying a cold compress to the outside of the cheek during the first 24 hours can help manage swelling. Stick to soft foods while healing and avoid anything hard, crunchy, or sticky.

For the first several days, avoid smoking, using a straw, or rinsing vigorously. These activities can dislodge the blood clot and lead to dry socket, a condition where the clot is lost before the wound has healed, leaving the bone exposed and causing significant discomfort. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days, though recovery time varies with the complexity of the extraction.
