Our Team & Technology
Aesthetic Family Dentistry has served the Port Jervis community for over 50 years. Our team includes Seth I. Horn, DMD; Loni Musi, DDS; Richard Hong, DMD; and Angela Barrett, DDS. Dr. Horn earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and holds memberships in the American Dental Association, the New York State Dental Association, the Tri-State Dental Society, and the Orange County Dental Society. He continues his education through the Center for Advanced Dental Study and the Northern California Institute of Cosmetic Dentistry.
Our office is equipped with Cone Beam CT imaging, which lets us evaluate the position and angle of wisdom teeth and the surrounding bone before surgery. That in-house diagnostic capability means the same practice that takes your scans performs your procedure. Nitrous oxide sedation is available for adults and children undergoing complex or anxiety-producing procedures, and the level can be adjusted at any time during treatment.
We accept most insurance plans. Patients without insurance can access care through our Membership Plan, a wellness plan with no deductibles, no annual maximums, and no waiting periods, plus a 10% discount on additional treatment. Financing is also available through our Smile Now, Pay Over Time program.
When Wisdom Teeth Need to Come Out
Not every wisdom tooth requires removal. The decision depends on position, angle, and whether the tooth is causing or likely to cause problems. These are the situations our team evaluates most often:
Common reasons for wisdom teeth removal:
- Impaction: The tooth is trapped under the gum or pressed against an adjacent tooth because there isn’t enough space to erupt fully
- Pericoronitis: Partial eruption creates a flap of gum tissue that traps bacteria, leading to infection, swelling, and pain
- Overcrowding: An erupting wisdom tooth may push against neighboring teeth and affect alignment
- Cyst formation: An impacted tooth can develop a fluid-filled cyst around its follicle that damages surrounding bone and teeth over time
Evaluating wisdom teeth in the mid-to-late teen years gives our team a helpful window to monitor eruption patterns and plan ahead. Removing a tooth before it causes complications can be more straightforward than treating one that already has.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
The process begins with a consultation. We review your medical history and current medications, then use our in-house Cone Beam CT to get a precise picture of tooth position and surrounding structures before planning the approach.
On the day of the procedure, local anesthesia numbs the area. For patients who want it, nitrous oxide sedation is available to reduce anxiety and improve comfort. Simple erupted wisdom teeth can often be removed similarly to a standard extraction. Impacted teeth may require a small incision and, in some cases, sectioning the tooth for removal. Gauze is placed afterward to control bleeding, and we go over written aftercare instructions with you before you leave. Patients who receive sedation should arrange for a driver.
Recovery After Wisdom Teeth Removal
Swelling and discomfort in the first two to three days are typical and often improve within a week. Applying a cold compress to the outside of the cheek during the first 24 hours can help manage swelling. Stick to soft foods while healing and avoid anything hard, crunchy, or sticky.
For the first several days, avoid smoking, using a straw, or rinsing vigorously. These activities can dislodge the blood clot and lead to dry socket, a condition where the clot is lost before the wound has healed, leaving the bone exposed and causing significant discomfort. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days, though recovery time varies with the complexity of the extraction.
Contact our office if you experience increasing pain after the first few days, fever, excessive bleeding, or swelling that worsens rather than improves. We provide post-operative support and follow-up care as part of the treatment process.
Insurance & Payment Options
We accept most insurance plans. Coverage for wisdom teeth removal varies by plan; some classify the procedure as oral surgery and apply different benefit levels than routine extractions. Our team can help you understand what your plan covers at the time of your consultation.
If you don’t have insurance, two options are worth discussing with us. The Membership Plan is a wellness plan available exclusively at Aesthetic Family Dentistry for a low monthly fee, with no deductibles, no annual maximums, and no waiting periods, along with a 10% discount on additional treatment. Financing through the Smile Now, Pay Over Time program is also available for patients who prefer to spread the cost over time.
